Great post! These kinds of side-by-side comparisons are just what I wanted to see. I don't think anything demonstrates Midjourney's progress quite like that hamster photo. Mutant mogwai to adorable critter in just 1 year!

"Mutant Mogwai" - what a spot-on description! Also, dibs on "Mutant Mogwai" as the name of a Gorillaz-style band where every character is animated by Midjourney V1.

Great to hear you found the post useful. The level of progress here is really astounding indeed.

Tried v5 today with some old prompts. The results (esp. with prompts that had meh outcomes before) are mind blowing. However, I am not a huge fan of the fact that images turn out more photorealistic.

Hi Mona,

Agreed. Midjourney V5 is definitely impressive in many ways, but I also find that it skews heavily towards photography (as I also mention in my post). Some of my older V4 prompts actually look less interesting in V5.

Keep in mind that V5 is currently in a "raw" alpha state. The Midjourney team are expecting to release an update that will give it a pre-built aesthetic. I'm curious to see how that turns out.

Thanks for your comment!

I am curious, too. Tried a bit more and some results were more interesting with v4.

Thanks for your article and answer!
