5 Best Midjourney Prompts: May 2023 (Fun Terms)
This edition introduces some fun power terms that have a dramatic, even if not always predictable, effect. Enjoy!
Happy Thursday, everyone!
I’m (mostly) back in action after last week’s fun times.
And what better way to make a comeback than by adding five new Midjourney prompts to my growing collection?
Today I’m sharing a few wacky one-word terms that have a very strong effect on the image. These prompts single-handedly affect the whole composition and atmosphere of a scene. They aren’t the most precise descriptors but they are a whole lot of fun.
Note: All sample images are generated using Midjourney Version 5.1.
Prompt #1: Sprinkle in a bit of creepiness
Haunted places, horror vibes, gloomy atmosphere. Sounds like your cup of tea? If so, this one’s for you!
Midjourney prompt: creepypasta [subject]
What it does: Creepypasta is the online equivalent of spooky stories told around a campfire. Using just this single modifier in your Midjourney prompt is powerful enough to horror up the entire scene. Really great for setting an eerie mood.

Prompt #2: Turn the details up to the max
You want more stuff in your image? We’ve got more stuff for your image!
Midjourney prompt: maximalist [subject]
What it does: Maximalism, as the name may suggest, is a counter-minimalist movement. In art, it’s usually associated with an excess of decorative details, eclectic colors, etc. The way Midjourney treats this prompt is by cramming as many related items into your image as it can get away with. Realistic? Nope. Fun? You bet!

Prompt #3: Inject Kurzgesagt’s unique style into your image
This one’s a bit special, and that’s a good thing.
Midjourney prompt: kurzgesagt [subject]
What it does: Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell is one of my all-time favorite YouTube channels. They do science-based deep dives into all sorts of topics and are known for their unique visual style. With this prompt, Midjourney mimics the style quite well and can kurzgesagtify any scene of your choosing.

Prompt #4: Play with multicolored patterns
Midjourney lets you bring back childhood memories by using a virtual kaleidoscope.
Midjourney prompt: kaleidoscopic [subject]
What it does: I find kaleidoscopes quite fascinating. They’re just simple plastic tubes with mirros and a bunch of cheap colored materials inside, yet the resulting patterns are always fresh, vibrant, and mesmerizing. Midjourney runs your subjects through a virtual kaleidoscope, with awesome results.

Prompt #5: Go all-out crazy with your scene
Shout-out to Shane McGeehan of Prompter Guide for sharing this one!
Midjourney prompt: discombobulate [subject]
What it does: Despite sounding like a knock-off Harry Potter spell, “discombobulate” is a legit term. It means to disorient or cause confusion. In Midjourney, this prompt adds all sorts of over-the-top, surreal details to your subject, giving it a Dr. Seussian feel. (See Shane McGeehan’s advanced tips for using it with stronger prompt weights.)

Hope these prompts give you something fun to play with. Remember that you can also try them with other models like Stable Diffusion, just to see what happens.

Love these MJ prompts! I have one you might like. “Wes Anderson”, Especially when paired with “fashion” really captures his unique mid century-modern style.
