If it's any consolation, "custom instruction" is pretty meh.

Yeah, it's nothing that can't be replicated with a copy-paste instruction, but it's the principle of it. The nerve. The injustice!

The grass is always greener.

The problem is that it's automatic for all chats, but it could be made a lot easier if you could set personalities or something like that, one particular sector of your ChatGPT interface that acts one way, and another sector that answers differently. I can see that being really useful. An umbrella for everything I use the service for isn't as helpful, though.

Here’s exactly what I wrote:

**What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses?**

I am an ELearning developer for a university library. I create online tutorials with animated videos and quiz questions to teach students about information literacy, library research, generative AI, and other topics. I also offer webinars and online courses for librarians on understanding new technologies.

Sometimes when I’m using ChatGPT it’s for demonstration purposes, and other times it’s for my personal use. For my personal life I like to talk about vegetarian food, e-bikes, fighting ageism, living as a digital nomad, remote work, climate change and other topics.

**how would you like ChatGPT to respond?**

Each time you respond, please ask me whether the question is for my personal life or for demonstration purposes for work. For personal life you can be casual and friendly. For demonstration purposes for work you can talk as if you’re talking with an undergraduate college student.

This is extremely helpful, thanks so much for sharing. I may consider including your strategy as a tip in future "10X AI" issues, with full credit of course!

I set up two options in custom instructions. I told it to ask me each time which way to respond. For personal life? Or for work? And I wrote up specifics for each of those. I suppose you could set up more than two.

Hey, that's a brilliant way to hack it, thanks for the idea! Will give it a whirl... when custom instructions finally come to Europe.

Nicole, I only see one field for custom instructions in Settings. Did you do this somewhere else, or was the initial prompt something like, "ask me every time whether it's for work or personal, and do X or Y depending" , then with the additional instructions?

I appreciate the potential workaround!

The latter is how I read Nicole's comment: Writing both sets of instructions into the single "custom instructions" field and explicitly telling ChatGPT to ask which one to use for each chat.

But I'd also love to hear any specifics that might be helpful here!

Dan, I'm gonna give this a shot. Thanks for facilitating this conversation! and, thanks again, Nicole.

I was skeptical at first, too. Then it occurred to me that I could just tell it what I wanted! It’s easy to forget that!

Super helpful the way you did this. I think I was worried it would be too much info initially, and would distract the model, but I find it to be good so far today! :)

And later I realized I should have told it when I type P or when I type W. (For less typing on my phone). And then I realized that only typing the letter worked anyway! I didn’t need to tell it.
